Arsenal closing in on ideal Per Mertesacker replacement

Arsenal’s inability to maintain a solid lead has cost them dearly over the last few matches. Luckily, they may have a great opportunity to fix their issues at the centre-back position if they finalize a move for AS Roma and Greece defender Kostas Manolas.

According to the Metro, Arsenal are considering a move for Manolas with Arsene Wenger believing he might very well serve as a replacement for 31-year-old Per Mertesacker.

Per the source, Manolas has been heavily scouted by Arsenal while Mertesacker has been relegated to the bench in recent competitions.

The 24-year-old centre-back has started 39 of 40 appearances for Roma and was featured heavily in their Champions League bid this past season.

Arsenal gave up a 2-0 lead to West Ham and settled for a 3-3 draw two weeks ago. This past weekend they gave up a 1-0 lead to lowly Crystal Palace in the final 10 minutes en route to a 1-1 draw.
