It seems as though Arsenal and Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil has much more respect for England’s Euro 2016 odds than many English pundits. Ahead of the European championship tournament, the assist wizard provided an assist to England’s title chances – and he wasn’t just being diplomatic.
In an interview with the Evening Standard, Ozil said that England should be considered one of the favourites to win the Euro title and praised the Three Lions’ group of strikers.
“The level in attack for England with Kane, Vardy or Rooney has changed in recent games — and the style of game they play is different compared to previous times,” Ozil said. “I would say the attack is very strong and especially Kane and Vardy have done well. But, of course, that was in friendlies and now we have to see how they perform in a tournament.”
However, Ozil stopped short of asserting that England could actually beat the defending FIFA World Cup champions.
“More than that is hard to say — it is difficult to speak about who will win because the tournament is very open. But, for me, they are one of the favourites for the title — and that’s not just a diplomatic answer!”
England have not been given strong odds to win the title and few pundits have them getting into the Semi-Finals, let alone a Final against what will likely be Germany. The team are fielding the youngest team in the tournament and one of the youngest in their history.
