Surprise La Liga giant enter race with Man City & Real Madrid for £65m striker

Not known as the world’s biggest spenders, Atletico Madrid still came inches away from a Champions League title this past year after beating several far bigger spenders – Barcelona and Bayern Munich. But the UCL runner-ups are hoping Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang can give them that extra boost.

According to Sun Sport via AS, Atletico Madrid have emerged as surprise favourites to land the Borussia Dortmund superstar.

Per the source, the La Liga giants have made contact with both Aubameyang’s agent as well as his father. However, Aubameyang is believed to prefer Real Madrid over Atletico or Premier League giants Manchester City.

The Gabon striker finished second in the Bundesliga in scoring this past season, scoring a career-high 25 league goals in 29 matches and 39 goals in 46 total matches.

Aubameyang is seen as an ideal partner for Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres in Diego Simeone’s scheme – but certain transfer restrictions may inhibit Atletico’s ability to land him – regardless of whether the Gabon striker chooses them.
