Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil is reportedly at an advanced stage in negotiations with the club over a new contract worth £160,000-a-week.

The German international has less than two years remaining on his current deal, and with on-going delays over a new agreement, it has led to some anxious supporters waiting for news.

However, according to The Mirror, a club insider has suggested that they are “getting closer” to tying him down to a new five-year contract worth £160,000-a-week.

The 28-year-old has been in inspired goalscoring form so far this season, scoring seven in 13 appearances along with three assists.

Having reiterated just how important he is to the Gunners and how much of a difference his quality makes for them, it has merely strengthened the desire to see the two parties reach an agreement.

The Mirror claim that talks are now at an advanced stage and will now continue after the international break with Arsenal’s immediate focus on the north London derby with Tottenham on Sunday.

Nevertheless, should Ozil put pen to paper on a new deal, it will be another welcome boost for the Premier League giants as they continue to establish themselves as legitimate title contenders this season.

It will certainly continue to lift the mood at the Emirates and reaffirm their ambitions moving forward with Arsene Wenger strengthening the squad over the summer and putting his players in a position to compete.

Fresh from scoring a superb solo goal against Ludogorets in the Champions League in midweek, the French tactician will hope that his creative ace will continue to lead the way for his side as Ozil continues to mature heading into the peak years of his career.
