Let’s get this straight. No club was spared the ignominy of relegation because of the size of their average attendance or because of the contents of their trophy cabinet and if i hear another person say that Newcastle, and at a push Boro, are too good to go down, i swear i will rip their faces off with a spoon!

Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing still hasn’t signed a contract extension with the Riverside club. Downing’s agent Ian Elliott reckons that he’ll see out the remaining two and a bit years of his contract and swan off to a swankier contract with a bigger club thank-you-very-much. However, Middlesbrough Chairman Steve Gibson and Manager Gareth Southgate seem to be in denial, clinging to the misguided belief that Downing will see sense and sign on the dotted line.
An optimistic Gareth Southgate said:
“He is very, very settled in his mind that he wants to play his football here and he is an incredibly valuable part of the team.
“I know negotiations have been going on for quite a while, but what we have tried to do with all the young players is keep rewarding them every year or two years for their performances and get their contracts sorted out before it gets to the stage where they have only a few months left.
“With Stewart, we are talking about this, but he still has two years-plus to go. We see it as one of our priorities, but in terms of the timescale, there is still time to negotiate with him.”
So do Southgate and co need to wake up to the possibilty that in a couple of years Downing and his agent could do a number on Middlesbrough and leave for nothing?
Where would newspapers be without Stewart Downing during the transfer window periods? The Middlesbrough winger is always good for lots of idle speculation regarding a move away from the Riverside, before deciding to stay put in the north-east. The Daily Mail report that this is likely to happen yet again in January, despite the conniving efforts of his agent Ian Elliott to engineer a transfer (or a bigger pot of money for the player). Chairman Steve Gibson is not a happy bunny.
“We made a substantial offer which reflects Stewart’s status at our club and in our team.
“He (Elliott) has issued a statement which, when you study it, is an absolute contradiction. One one hand, it says Stewart wants to leave and then on the other, it says that Stewart will play out the remaining two-and-a-half years of his contract. Well, what is it to be?
“Stewart will have seven or eight years left at this level and the fact that he appears to have put his career in the hands of Ian Elliott is a source of concern for me because I don’t think that’s in Stewart’s best interests.”
Another manipulative agent with £££ signs in front of his eyes? Surely not. One wonders whether there is any genuine interest from the likes of Tottenham or whether this just a smokescreen to land more cash for Downing, and subsequently his agent.
