The Stoke City team will have been delighted to have seen Portsmouth’s match against Guimaraes go to extra-time on Thursday, with the Potters travelling to Fratton Park on Sunday for their Premier League clash. Pompey lost to the Portuguese team 2-0 after normal time, but a brace from Peter Crouch ensured it was Harry Redknapp’s men who were celebrating. And what do you do after a hard-earned victory like that?
Never mind the champagne in the dressing room, Sky Sports reports that the Portsmouth squad will be waddling into the ice-cold sea on Friday morning, good to see professional footballers have it tough in some respects! Harry Redknapp reveals that the flight has been postponed so that his players can shift all that lactic acid out of their legs.
“We’ve put our flight back so they can have a swim,” said Redknapp.
“There are no ice baths in the hotel, so they’ll be in the sea in the morning.
“It’s freezing cold but it’s the only way they’re going to get the acid out of their legs.
“They need to get rid of the lactic acid in time for the weekend, because now games will come thick and fast.
“They’re all knackered and had massages straight after the game.”
Indeed, it’s a new challenge for the Portsmouth team, who now have an exciting adventure in Europe to enjoy. It’s entirely possible that their league form will suffer as a result of their additional games in the UEFA Cup, although Pompey fans will have the opportunity for more exciting trips on the continent. And the players can enjoy a dip in various bodies of water to boot!
