Sunderland are reported to be targeting a move for Lazio attacker, Mauro Zarate, TalkSport understands.

The 26-year-old has asked Lazio to cancel his contract since falling out of favour at the Rome based giants. He had spent last season on loan at Inter Milan but caused an outrage earlier this month by being snapped poolside in the Maldives whilst he was supposed to be recovering from an injury.

Zarate has made just seven appearances this season and the player’s agent, Luis Ruzzi said; “We have called on the club to terminate the contract and we have many documents at our disposal to make it effective.”

Martin O’Neil has been a longtime admirer of the skilful Argentine and reportedly came close to bringing him in on loan in January. The manager also got a closer look at the player when he spent part of the 2008/09 season on loan at Birmingham City. Despite scoring four goals in 14 games for the Midlands club his spell there was ultimately unsuccessful as they were relegated from the Premier League.

Sunderland aren’t the only ones keeping an eye on his situation, though, with the likes of Liverpool, Stoke and Arsenal all thought to be monitoring events in the Italian capital too.

He’s yet to break into the full national team, but has made an impact in Italy by scoring 34 times in 126 games for Lazio.
