Monaco general director Filips Dhondt has admitted that the club would  be unlikely to succeed in any attempts to sign the likes of Barcelona’s Leo Messi or Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo according to Goal.com.

The French club have been causing waves in the football world with their lavish spending this summer.

The Ligue 2 Champions have already signed James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho from Porto for a combined £60 million.

They are expected to be followed by Atletico Madrid’s Colombian striker Radamel Falcao who has undergone a medical at the club in recent days.

The lavish spending confirms the club’s desire to establish themselves amongst the dominant forces in European football.

But Dhondt insisted that the club’s spending spree will soon come to an end. He went on to dismiss the idea that the club could make a move for either Leo Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

Dhondt stated that he did not expect the club to sign more than six players over the course of the summer and insisted the club would strengthen their defence before they splashed more cash on attacking reinforcements.

Dhondt went on to say that the club’s owner, Russian tycoon Dmitry Rybolovlev, is keen to see the side win the Champions League title but appreciates that it is something which will take time.
