Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has claimed that he has spoken to his former Montpellier teammate Younes Belhanda about a potential summer move to the Premier League, Sky Sports reports.

Last week the Moroccan international stated that he was keen to quit the French club this summer in favour of a move to England or Germany, as he has been linked with the likes of Arsenal and their north London rivals Tottenham.

Giroud and Belhanda spent two years together at the French club and were a part of the side that won the league title in 2011/12 before the former made the move to The Emirates.

Recently, Giroud was asked by French newspaper L’Equipe about the possibility of his friend joining him in the Premier League, to which he said: “I would welcome him with open arms. He called me to ask advice about the Premier League.

“He has the right physical abilities and is built for that league. He would just need to work on his fitness to resist challenges.”

He was also asked bout his first season in an Arsenal shirt after scoring 17 goals and still not being deemed fit enough to fill Robin Van Persie’s boots.

“I am quite happy with my first season at Arsenal,” he added. “I am very happy we secured Champions League qualification because a lot of people didn’t have any faith in us,” he added.

“There was an unconscious pressure due to the departure of van Persie, with a lot of expectation. But the boss played me little by little in the starting IX to ease the weight of that expectation.”
