Arsenal and Fenerbache are said to be tracking young Benfica defender Lorenzo Melgarejo, the player’s agent has told Sky Sports.

The 22-year-old left-back was part of the Benfica side that impressed in their run to the Europa League final this season, where they were eventually beaten 2-1 in a close contest with Premier League side Chelsea.

The Paraguay international started his career as a left winger before being converted into a defender by Benfica manager Jorge Jesus, though it is unclear where he would fit in at Arsenal under Arsene Wenger, who already has two left-backs in Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal.

Melgarejo’s agent, Juan Gabriel Appleyard, has been quoted as saying: “Arsenal and Fenerbahce have enquired about Melgarejo. But so far there has been nothing concrete.”

Arsenal are expected to be busy in this summer’s transfer window, after the club’s chief executive Ivan Gazidis has revealed that Wenger will have more money to spend on players to take the club forward.

Benfica, on the other hand, are preparing for several departures, with star players Nemanja Matic, Oscar Cardozo and Nicolas Gaitain all attracting strong interest from Europe’s top clubs, and could all be keen to move on after a trophyless season for the Portuguese side.
