Barcelona are set to spend big on a centre back this summer according to Marca.

The club recently bought highly-rated Brazilian striker Neymar for £48 million but that won’t stop the club from buying a top class centre back.

Barca have been linked with plenty of centre-backs this summer, including Paris St Germain’s Thiago Silva and Chelsea’s David Luiz.

A centre back is seen as a top priority for Barca this summer following the 7-0 aggregate thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals.

First choice centre back Carlos Puyol has been absent for the club with a long standing knee injury and is only starting to return to fitness.

However, many at the club believe that at 35, Puyol’s best is behind him and signing a top class centre back is a must.

The issue has been discussed at the clubs board meeting and spokesman Toni Flexia said ” “I can’t tell you how much we’ve earmarked for signings, because that could hinder the club, as anyone we approached would know how much we had to spend. But we’ll do all the business we want to and Barcelona will bring in some first-class reinforcements this summer”.

Rumours have circulated today that Barca made a move for Real Madrid’s young centre Rafael Varane, only to be rebuffed by the central defender.

Barcelona have denied this but it is certainly the case that the club are desperate for a new defender and will spend whatever it takes to secure one.
