Fiorentina have today confirmed the signing of Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez, after the two clubs agreed a fee of €18million for the German international according to the BBC.

The 6 ft 2 forward has signed a four-year contract with the Italian club, keeping him there until the summer of 2017. The deal is subject to a medical, but Bayern Munich have already confirmed that their number 33 will be leaving them in the very near future.

Mario last season helped Bayern to the treble [Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB Pokal] but felt he was not getting the first team football he deserved, which the Italian side felt they could provide. The German striker wanted to leave his home country in search of first team football, they needed a new striker to replace Steven Jovetic and they had the funds to pay for him.

It is really only a matter of time until Steven Jovetic puts pen to paper for Juventus after he rejected a move to Arsenal to stay in Italy. Fiorentina do have a €30 million asking price for the Montenegrin international , which Juventus are yet to have offered – their highest bid so far has been €20 million [€5 million less than the Arsenal bid].

Mario Gomez should fill the void left by the 23 year-old, although he will have to fight amongst Giuseppe Rossi, Adem Ljajic and El Hamdaoui for first team football, next season.

On the German club’s website they stated how “it was Mario Gomez’ desire to leave Bayern and join Fiorentina” and that the club has just accommodated his wishes. The 27 year-old himself told FCB.tv how “leaving the best club in the world was a tough personal decision,” in his final goodbye interview, but admitted he just loves football, and wants to be playing more than he was for the European champions.
