Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is targeting Aston Villa misfit Shay Given as backup to new first choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, the Mirror understands.

Rodgers is keen to add some experience between the sticks following Pepe Reina’s departure to Napoli earlier in the summer and has targeted the Republic of Ireland international as the ideal man to do so.

Villa boss Paul Lambert has made it clear that the 37-year-old is surplus to requirements at the club after losing his place to American international Brad Guzan last season and now slipping behind new signing Jed Steer in the pecking order.

Lambert did not take the former Newcastle stopper on the club’s pre season tour of Germany and is now looking to shift his hefty £60,000-a-week deal off the wage bill as the club continues to restructure.

The news of his availability has now alerted Rodgers who would be interested in taking him on board for a nominal fee.

Given signed for Villa from Manchester City in the summer of 2011 for a fee in the region of £4 million and he went on to make a total of 37 appearances for the club before falling out of favour.
