Manchester United are interested in five central midfielders as manager David Moyes desperately tries to add quality re-enforcements to his squad before the transfer window closes on Monday night, the Daily Star reports.

Moyes hopes that he can land at least two of the five midfielders that he has targeted and is optimistic that one of them will be Roma’s Daniele De Rossi, with the Italian possibly joining United on a season long loan.

The Scot’s newest target is Borussia Dortmund Ilkay Gundogan, who is one of German football’s best creative midfielders.

The German international is rated at around £20 million and Dortmund would be willing to sell the 22 year old if United were to let Shinji Kagawa move back to the German club.

Kagawa was left out of United’s game with Liverpool on Sunday, increasing the possibility that he could be moving back to Dortmund on Monday.

Real Madrid’s Luke Modric is another target, with the Spanish club set to sell at least one midfielder due to the likely arrival of Gareth Bale at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Atletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera is also a possibility if United are willing to activate his £30 million buy-out clause while Moyes may still move for one of his long term targets, Everton’s Marouane Fellaini.
