Gunners midfielder hails arrival of German playmaker.
Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has hailed the effect that the signing of Mesut Ozil has had on the club, the Daily Express reports.
The German playmaker arrived at the Emirates Stadium in a surprise move on transfer deadline day, with Arsenal smashing their record transfer fee by paying £42.4m to bring Ozil to the club from Real Madrid.
A highly influential and impressive player during his time at the Bernabeu, Ozil has also started his Arsenal career in fine form, and scored two goals in Saturday’s 4-1 thrashing of Norwich City.
The win took Arsene Wenger’s side to the top of the table and continued their fine start to the season, which Arteta believes is largely down to the arrival of Ozil and a huge lift in the mood at the north London club.
With no silverware since the FA Cup in 2005, Arsenal have had a difficult time in the last few years and come under much criticism, though Arteta now feels the team are more confident and in a better position to challenge for trophies.
With so much of the spotlight on Ozil as well when he arrived, the Spaniard believes his new team-mate has done well to cope with that pressure and perform at his best.
“There was a lot of pressure on Mesut when he joined us, but he has dealt with it fantastically well and now we know we can play against any team,” he said.
“It gives you great confidence when top players come in. Psychologically, it is very different to when you see your best players leaving.
“We have more confidence. We are winning games that last season we were drawing. We have been able to handle it when we have tough moments. We are able to get the points at the end.”
