Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace are eyeing up a shock move for former Manchester United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen to replace the recently departed Ian Holloway in the Selhurst Park dugout, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The highly rated Dutchman left his role with the Premier League champions last summer following the departure from Old Trafford of manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Meulensteen briefly took up a position with Anzhi Makhachkala working as Guus Hiddink’s right-hand man, before then joining the Qatar Football Association.

However, the Eagles are hopeful of being able to exploit a clause in Meulensteen’s contract in Qatar to appoint him as their next boss.
