The Gunners went into the match already suffering from a shortage of numbers in attack, with first-choice front man Olivier Giroud having also picked up an ankle injury in the club’s 1-0 win against Newcastle United at St James’ Park last Sunday afternoon.

And with Germany international forward Lukas Podolski himself having only just returned to action following a long layoff with a hamstring injury, Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger could find himself having to utilise wide man Theo Walcott as an auxiliary attacker in the club’s huge FA Cup third-round clash with north-London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates on Saturday.

The Frenchman is unsure just how long his misfiring Danish marksman will be out of action for, with the player having twisted his ankle badly while giving the Gunners the lead late on in their 2-0 home win over struggling Cardiff in the Premier League.
