Chelsea, Man City, Man United and La Liga giants Real Madrid have all taken a fancy for the Serbian international who has been in fine form in the Primeira Liga and could be set to leave Lisbon in the January transfer window.
The Times claim that Matic has a £25.7m price-tag but Benfica are strapped for cash at present, especially since failing to secure a path into the last 16 of the Champions League, and therefore may accept a lesser fee for the 25 year old.
The Gunners have apparently made contact with Matic’s agent Dejan Mitrovic and a return to the Premier League may well tempt the rangy midfielder.
Matic left Chelsea for Benfica as part of the deal that saw David Luiz move in the opposite direction and has gone to become a pivotal member of the Estádio da Luz side, making 93 appearances in all competitions since moving to Portugal in January 2011.
Though Arsenal possess many central midfield options aside from Mathieu Flamini, and at a push Mikel Arteta, Wenger doesn’t have many tough tackling steely battlers to call upon and Matic could offer a great deal of protection for his more creative talents.
