Real Madrid will launch a summer bid to sign Man United striker Wayne Rooney.

CaughtOffside understands that Bernabeu boss Carlo Ancelotti has been given the go ahead to pursue the 28 year old Old Trafford star, who will have a year to run on his current contract when the season comes to a close and as such vulnaerable to offers from interested parties.

Ancelotti is looking to bring in Rooney to form part of a three pronged attack with Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid will offer £45m for the Man United star, an offer the Premier League side may be forced to consider if they can not convince the forward to sign a new contract.

Rooney has had an excellent season thus far, being both Man United’s top scorer and leading assist maker in Premier League action, but the chances of the former Everton man leaving the club will be significantly increased if David Moyes fails to secure a top four finish.

The chance of a fresh challenge with Spanish giants Real Madrid may be a possibility Rooney would consider, not least as it would see the Man United man reunite with his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Real Madrid have of course picked up a few Man United stars in recent years with the likes of Ronaldo, David Beckham and Ruud Van Nistelrooy making the move to the Spanish capital.

Rooney is Man United’s fourth all time leading goal-scorer having netted 208 goals in 425 appearances.
