The 27-year-old has joined as a free agent after being released by Spanish outfit Almeria and will go straight into the squad ahead of Sunderland’s Capital One Cup second leg tie against Manchester United on Wednesday.

Ustari, who has been capped twice at international level, joined Almeria from Boca Juniors on a two-year deal over the summer but played just two times in the Copa Del Rey before Esteban Suarez took over for La Liga duty.

In a statement, the Spanish club said: “Almeria and Oscar Ustari have reached an agreement to rescind the player’s contract.

“The Argentinian goalkeeper had asked the club to leave so he could have minutes in another team, as one of his objectives is to be able to return to the Argentina squad and play in the World Cup in Brazil.”

On his move, Ustari told UDA Radio: “Despite not having played much here I’ve been very happy these six months. Almeria is a great city to live in and I won’t forget it. I have many friends in the dressing room.

“I want to thank Almeria for agreeing for me to go and I hope and trust that the team secure their survival several weeks before the end of the season.

“To the club, my team-mates, the coaching staff, the fans, to everyone, I want to say thanks.”
