Gunners have been chasing the youngster for some time now.

Schalke 04 chairman Clemens Tonnies says that he will do everything in his power to convince in-demand midfielder Julian Draxler to remain at the club next season, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

The coveted Germany international was the subject of one huge offer for his services during the recent January transfer window that was rejected out of hand by the Bundesliga outfit.

However, with the 20-year-old’s current contract, which runs until June 30 2018, containing a much publicised buyout clause in it worth a whopping 45.5m euros, the German side know that it will not be easy holding on to their star man beyond the end of this season.

But Tonnies says that he wants Draxler to stay with the club for the net two campaigns, with the Schalke supremo telling the SpoBiS exhibition in Dusseldorf: “It would do Draxler good to spend another year or two with us.

“But we know we’re not going to be able to keep a super-talented player like Julian at Schalke forever.

“If another club comes in for him, then we cannot block them. That would be unfair.

“I don’t think he wants to join Bayern Munich, though.”
