Manchester United are set to remedy their need for a new centre-back this summer by making a move for Real Madrid starlet Raphael Varane.

CaughtOffside understands that David Moyes is upping his ambitions when it comes to his targets this summer and is prepared to do what it takes to bring his prospective new players on board to avoid missing out on another disappointing off-season like last year.

Moyes missed out on several high profile names last summer, but has been promised a £100m transfer war chest this time around in a bid to re-establish the club as top dogs in the Premier League once again as they have failed to defend their title during his first campaign in charge.

Now the club’s main objective is to reach the Champions League, and should they do so they will be in a much better position to bring in the targets they have identified.

One of the players Moyes is said to be keen on is Real Madrid’s 20-year-old defender Raphael Varane.

Varane is reported to be earmarked as a long term replacement for the departing Serbian veteran Nemanja Vidic, who is said to be leaving for Inter Milan when his current deal expires in June.

The Frenchman broke into the Madrid first team during the 2011-12 season when he signed on from Lens in his home country, and he has been steadily making a greater contribution ever since, even breaking into the French senior side in 2013.

However, his season so far has been curtailed by injury, when he damaged his knee in November. He made his comeback for the side towards the end of January but has yet to figure in the first team.

Moyes is believed to be willing to make a starting bid of around £22m for him, and would be prepared to go higher should Madrid’s want dictate.

The Scot is also prepared to be patient with Varane as he adjusts to life in the Premier League by offering Rio Ferdinand a one year deal to help oversee his development during what would surely be a difficult first season in English football.

However, Madrid aren’t thought to be keen on selling such a highly prized asset, and United may have to go considerably over what they want to spend if they are to stand a chance of signing him.
