Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has earmarked impressive moves to strengthen his defence this summer with Football Direct News claiming that the Merseyside club will target Arsenal and Totteham centre-backs this summer.

Though the Anfield side have had no issues finding the back of the net they have also been far too leaky at the back, conceding 35 goals this term, Newcastle United are the only side in the top half of the table to have let in more, and therefore it’s no surprise that Rodgers would be looking to bring in alternatives.

New signing Kolo Toure has been woeful for much of the season, making some comical errors, and both Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel have been prone to mistakes and now Rodgers wants to shake things up at the back.

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is a player Rodgers wants to bring in and given that the North London club look set to lose the race for fourth spot to Liverpool a move to their rivals may tempt the former Ajax man.

Liverpool will also plot a move for Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen, Vertonghen’s Belgian national team colleague, with this source claiming an £8m bid may convince Arsene Wenger to sell the defender, who has made just three Premier League starts this season.
