Liverpool to Strengthen Defence With Move for Tottenham Defender Jan Vertonghen

Anfield side want White Hart Lane star.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is to join the race to sign Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen according to the Daily Mail.

Rodgers is keen to strengthen this leaky defence and White Hart Lane star Vertonghen is apparently ready to quite Spurs if they fail to secure a Champions League berth next term.

The 26 year old Belgian has been an excellent signing for the North London club, adapting well to life in the Premier League following his move to Tottenham from Ajax back in July 2012, but if Tim Sherwood fails to achieve a top four finish then a move to Anfield becomes all the more tempting.

Though Liverpool have now gone nine Premier League games without defeat they have tellingly conceded 12 goals in that period and but for the goal-scoring exploits of Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez, and recently Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson, the Merseyside club wouldn’t be sitting in second spot in the table.

Vertonghen can play both at left-back and in the centre of the defence and is arguably a more sound option than the likes of Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger and comically poor Kolo Toure.
