Liverpool are the latest club to show an interest in Heerenveen striker Alfred Finnbogason, CaughtOffside has learnt.

A Reds scout was in attendance to watch the 25-year-old in Iceland’s 3-1 defeat in Wales on Wednesday.

Finnbogason struggled against the Gareth Bale-inspired hosts and was withdrawn at half time but Liverpool retain a keen interest in the forward, who has scored a staggering 46 league goals in 54 appearances for Heerenveen.

The Icelander’s goal-to-game is better than Luis Suarez’s in the Eredivisie and while Liverpool officials know Finbogason will not have the same impact as the Uruguayan, senior figures on the club’s transfer committee, including boss Brendan Rodgers, believe he is worth a punt in the summer.

Celtic have been extensively linked with the goal-scorer but are unlikely to be able to meet the Dutch club’s £8m asking price.

New Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also a fan of Finnbogason, while Everton, Roma and Villarreal have all also been linked with the player.

Rodgers has watched Suarez and strike-partner Daniel Sturridge score more goals between them than the majority of Premier League teams this season but the Northern Irishman wants a plan B, which Finnbogason could offer.
