The Gunners were easily beaten by the Merseyside giants in a result that has now completely thrown open the race to finish in fourth place in the Premier League come May, and with it gain entry into next season’s Uefa Champions League.

And with Roberto Martinez’s in-form outfit now just a point behind Arsenal, but with a game in hand on the north Londoners, their Champions League destiny is out of their own hands as we enter the closing stretch.

However, the experienced French trainer offered no excuses after the match, saying: “Our performance wasn’t convincing, defensively or offensively. Everton were better and deserved to win.

“It’s a very disappointing result and performance, the two go together. We have to regroup and get back to basics.

“Psychologically we’ve lost a bit of confidence. We had a lot of the ball but weren’t really dangerous.”
