The Gunners haven’t found a suitable replacement in that position ever since allowing Alex Song to depart for Barcelona in 2012, but CaughtOffside understands that Arsene Wenger has been watching the 23-year-old Spaniard for several months now and has even had his scouting team sending back regular reports over his progress.

Camacho has been in good form this season despite Malaga being mired in mid-table mediocrity and has caught the eye of a number of fellow Spanish sides, but it is Arsenal who have decided to jump in by planning talks as soon as the season ends in May.

Beginning his career with Atletico Madrid, he made his way through the youth set up in the capital city and made his debut in the first team during the 2007/08 season. However, despite being billed as a hot prospect at the Vicente Calderon, he was unable to get a foothold in the side and made the switch to Malaga in the 2011 January transfer window. He made a total of 30 appearances for Atletico, scoring two goals.

He featured heavily under Manuel Pellegrini since joining the Andalusian site last season and has carried on that influence into the current campaign.

Wenger is looking at him to replace the ageing Mikel Arteta, who has seen his form dip lately, prompting speculation that he may be on his way out of the club at the end of the season.
