Former World Cup winning captain Lothar Mattheus has confirmed that young Nurnberg attacker Josip Drmic will join Arsenal this summer, reports the Express.
Last week the legendary ex-Germany international claimed that Drmic’s wife was looking round London for potential houses for the couple, and although the young Swiss star has denied even having a girlfriend, Mattheus has reiterated his certainty that the transfer will take place.
“You will see Drmic will go to Arsenal for £8 million – I was right before and I’ll be right again,” Mattheus told Bild in a follow up interview.
His being ‘right before’ relates to his correctly predicting the transfer of Robert Lewandowski to Bayern Munich (which was, to be fair, the worst kept secret in football), and Adrian Ramos to Borussia Dortmund, which was very recently confirmed.
21-year-old Drmic has shone this term for a struggling side, and £8m seems like a real bargain for a youngster who has scored 16 Bundesliga goals this term so far.
In fact, since the turn of 2014, only Lionel Messi, Daniel Sturridge and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have bagged more league goals in Europe than Drmic.
He can play centrally, although has been often deployed from the right wing, where he can cut in and shoot on goal, as well as create chances for others.
Arsenal are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements, with Nicklas Bendtner leaving in the summer, Yaya Sanogo yet to prove himself, and Olivier Giroud totally out of form.
Drmic then could provide a relatively cheap option, although Gunners fans will hope the club targets a genuinely world-class striker as well.
