Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell reckons the Gunners can seriously challenge for the Premier League title next season if they sign three world class players.

Arsenal have not been champions of England since Campbell helped the North Londoners win their 13th league crown in 2004.

A strong start to this season saw them threaten to break their drought. Arsene Wenger’s side were top of the table in early February, but they have since dropped to fourth after taking just 15 points from a possible 33.

Campbell believes that Arsenal’s conservative approach in the transfer market is holding them back and he is urging the board to be brave in the summer window.

“You have got to get to the stage where teams are frightened of you. You need options and they could do with a few more players who could frighten other teams with their playing ability,” explained Campbell.

“It will turn, but you need that cutting edge in your side. The board might have to put their head on the block and go for it and not be scared.

“If you spend money on a player and it does not work, you have to go again.”

For years, Wenger’s transfer policy has been based around signing talented youngsters and developing them into established first-team players.

The policy has done wonders for the club’s finances, but Campbell thinks that it is time to break with tradition and spend more to sign stars of the present, rather than prospects for the future.

“Yes, you can get players through scouting around the world, but ultimately these players are ready made and you have got to play top dollar to get them in.

“Arsenal need some more players who are ready-made and world class. With everyone fit, I think they need another three players.”

The Gunners have not won a major trophy since 2005, but they are the favourites to lift this season’s FA Cup, having qualified for the final, where they will meet Hull City.
