The Reds are about to embark on a major overhaul of the first-team squad at Anfield when the summer transfer window does finally reopen for business after securing a return to the Uefa Champions League last season for the first time in five years.
And one of the main areas of the team that Liverpool head coach Brendan Rodgers is understood to want to strengthen next season is in the forward line, with the Northern Irishman hoping to now land Bayern’s highly rated Switzerland international in order to boost his options in attack going forward.
Shaqiri, 22, only moved to the Bavarian giants from Swiss champions FC Basel in the summer of 2012 on a four-year deal for a transfer fee of £10m.
However, it is fair to say that in the intervening two campaigns at the Allianz Arena Shaqiri has struggled badly to win a regular place in the Champions League holders’ first team, so much so that the Merseysiders are now believed to be confident of signing the player this summer.
