The 25 year old Spanish international moved to the Allianz Arena in a £36m deal in the summer of 2012 and played a key role in the club’s treble winning success in his debut campaign at the German club, making 43 appearances in all competitions.

However under Pep Guardiola life has been tough on Martinez with the former Athletic Bilbao man starting just 14 Bundesliga fixtures and this has led to speculation that he may look to leave the Bavarian outfit this summer.

Martinez can effectively fill both centre-back and defensive midfield berths and Rodgers could well do with some added steel to help protect his leaky defence.

Liverpool conceded 50 goals in Premier League action last term, more than any side that finished in the top eight, so one can see why Rodgers would take a keen interest in Martinez.

It would take a fairly massive bid to convince Bayern Munich to sell Martinez but Rodgers will presumably be handed a large transfer war-chest after guiding Liverpool back to the Champions League.

Currently Rodgers can only really call upon Lucas Leiva to provide a tough tackling presence in the centre of the park and the Northern Irish boss may also feel that in a central defensive role Martinez could work well alongside Martin Skrtel.
