England manager Roy Hodgson has told Italy star Andrea Pirlo that he doesn’t scare anybody as the two sides head into the Group D opener at the World Cup on Saturday, according to the Daily Star.

Pirlo is the man that England stars will have been warned about ahead of the clash in Manaus, with Jack Wilshere highlighting him as their main threat.

The veteran midfielder, 35, destroyed Hodgson’s men when the Italians dumped England out of Euro 2012 on penalties after extra time.

Pirlo kept England at bay and didn’t allow them to get anywhere near him or the ball last time out, but Hodgson has said that he has learned from that encounter and will not fear the Juventus man this time around.

“How are we going to stop Pirlo? What we’re going to do first of all is we’re going to play better against Italy this time than we did then,” he said.

“All the players would agree with me. We didn’t think we’d played anywhere near as well as we could play.

“Of course, against a tiring team and a team that was playing with Pirlo had a very, very good game because he’s a very, very good player.

“But what we did do, we showed incredible character, incredible determination, incredible fight.

“Although we weren’t playing well, we kept a very strong Italian team at bay for 120 minutes and actually gave ourselves a chance of winning on penalties.

“What are we going to do this time against Pirlo? First, we’ll play a lot better, we’ll play with more energy because we’ll have more energy because it will be the first game in the tournament. We’ll be even more compact than we were in that game.

“We’re going to make certain also that Italy have a lot more to concern themselves with with our attacking play, because one of the problems we had in that game is that we weren’t functioning well as an attacking unit.

“One of our plans this time is to make certain we do a lot more attacking and that Italy find themselves wondering what they’re going to do about people like Steven Gerrard or Wayne Rooney.”
