Reds could turn the tables on Chelsea, and pinch a target from under their noses…
Liverpool have emerged as last minute contenders for the signature of Atletico Madrid’s Brazilian left-back Filipe Luis.
CaughtOffside understands that although Chelsea have nearly completed a deal for the 28-year-old, Brendan Rodgers’ club have approached the Spanish champions to see whether they can thrash out an ambitious last-minute transfer.
The Reds were expected to conclude a deal for Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno this week instead, but negotiations hit a brick wall, with the Premier League runners-up refusing to meet the sizeable £18m valuation for the 21-year-old.
Filipe Luis would command a similar fee, but he’s already regarded as one of the very best in the business, while Sevilla’s Spaniard is still just a promising young player.
The South American fullback, who for some strange reason didn’t make Brazil’s World Cup squad, is very much available, and Liverpool are keen to take advantage of this. Atletico have already splashed out £8m on his replacement Guilherme Siqueira, who will arrive in time for the 2014/15 season from Granada.
Liverpool badly need left-back improvements before next season, with young Englishman Jon Flanagan, naturally more comfortable on the right, predominantly used in the position last term. Doubts over Jose Enrique’s fitness continue to remain, meaning this summer the position has become a priority for Rodgers to strengthen.
Filipe Luis is excellent, and would seemingly tick all the boxes at Anfield if they can poach him under Jose Mourinho’s nose. The Blues already have the impressive Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back, and despite the fact Ashley Cole is leaving on a free, they’re not nearly as desperate to sign the star as Liverpool.
Interestingly, if the Reds did pull off the transfer coup, it would be in reverse to many deals Chelsea have nipped Liverpool to over the past twelve months. Last summer, Chelsea signed Willian after Liverpool were close to his signature, and they similarly secured Mohamed Salah in January after consistent links to the Reds.
