Olivier Giroud is expecting Arsenal to add to their attacking options over the summer and provide him with more competition up front for next season, reports ESPN.

Arsenal were largely seen as lacking in depth across their forward line last season, with only Giroud regarded as a first team striker. Yaya Sanogo featured towards the end of the campaign, most notably in the FA Cup final, but he has not put much pressure at all on Giroud’s starting berth.

Other forwards such as Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski tend to perform on the flanks, so it is a traditional centre-forward role that Giroud expects to see brought in.

“I can tell you Arsenal will add a striker to the team,” Giroud told the French website InfoSport+.

“We need another striker. Great clubs have several good strikers, who compete with each other.”

The Frenchman, who managed 22 goals last season, could be joined at the Emirates Stadium by Carlos Vela in the coming weeks. The Mexican striker was sold to Real Sociedad by Arsenal in 2012 and has impressed, scoring 16 goals for the La Liga side last season.

Vela is expected to return to the Gunners for as little as £3.5 million which is the buy-back clause in his contract. Whether he is the only reinforcement in attack that Arsene Wenger will add is yet to be seen.
