The Uruguayan could be in line for a lengthy ban if he is found guilty of biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during their group game on Tuesday.

It’s the third time the Reds hitman has been involved in a biting claim, after incidents at Ajax and the Anfield club, and many believe the bad publicity would put off potential suitors.

However, La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are still being credited with a heavy interest, though Calderon admits his former side will likely lose out to the Catalan side.

“He is one of the best players in the world in his position,” he said. “Both teams were interested in him.

“Real Madrid already have Karim Benzema at the moment and he’s also a very good striker. I don’t see any reason why they would change their strikers.

“It seems Barcelona are close to him, he is looking at going there.

“We also know he is close to Barcelona because his wife is from there and, I believe, his children were born there.

“Barcelona need him more than Real Madrid. They have Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema. Barcelona need a player like him much more.”
