Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina’s departure from Anfield is set to be confirmed, with the Mail reporting that the Spaniard has passed his medical with Bayern Munich ahead of his prospective move to the Bundesliga.
Reina is now set to conclude his move to the German champions, with Pep Guardiola’s man paying Liverpool £2m to bring Reina to the Allianz Arena as cover for first choice Manuel Neuer.
The Spaniard spent last season on loan with former manager Rafael Benitez at Napoli and, despite impressing in Serie A, was never likely to regain his place in the Anfield line-up ahead of Simon Mignolet.
The deal may free up additional funds for Brendan Rodgers, with Reina’s wages at Liverpool believed to be considerable – although Reds fans may continue to hold concerns over Brad Jones as back-up stopper.
Reina is unlikely to feature too much in the Bundesliga for Bayern, with German international Manuel Neuer the undisputed number one for Guardiola, but he will provide experienced and competent back-up for a player who is possibly the world’s finest goalkeeper.
After being brought to Anfield by Benitez, Reina enjoyed a successful spell as the Anfield club’s goalkeeper, but lost his place twelve months ago when Rodgers opted to sign Mignolet from Sunderland as his long-term replacement.
