The Argentine ace has been a top target for the Red Devils this summer, as the club have been tracking him since before the World Cup.
Madrid have stayed silent on the player’s future, but the Sun now says that manager Carlo Ancelotti has given him the green light to switch to Old Trafford.
The European champions have told Di Maria that he will be free to make the move to Old Trafford providing the club are able to meet Madrid’s £50m valuation of the player.
It had been thought that French champions Paris Saint Germain had been in pole position to snap him up, but their issues concerning Financial Fair Play has caused their bid to hit the skids, and their failure to offload any of their current stars to fund a move has virtually ended their chances of signing him.
Both Arsenal and Monaco are also thought to be interested in snapping him up, but they are looking at other targets, too.
