Sunderland will enquire about a possible loan move for Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates next week, while they remain interested in striker Fabio Borini.
The Uruguayan defender has been restricted to just 12 Premier League appearances for the Anfield club since joining them in 2011, but did get some game-time for former club Nacional during a loan spell earlier this year.
Reports in the Daily Mail have subsequently linked Sunderland with a move for the player, with the Black Cats also maintaining their interest in Borini, for whom they had a £14m bid accepted last month.
The 23-year-old is keen on a move away from Anfield, where he is well down the defensive pecking order – behind the likes of Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho, Daniel Agger and Kolo Toure.
Meanwhile, Sunderland manager Gus Poyet remains desperate to add a striker to his squad – and has been linked with Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck, as well as Borini, who is not keen on making the move to the Stadium of Light on a permanent basis, having played on loan their last year.
