Portuguese reports claim Lisbon are prepared to accept a significantly reduced fee of £24m for their coveted star, £11m less than had originally been expected.
However, Sporting chief Marco Silva does have one significant demand by including a clause that says Carvalho will be loaned back to the Lisbon giants should they fail to find a suitable replacement.
Sporting also have their eye on a number of Arsenal’s fringe stars including Yaya Sanogo, Serge Gnabry, Francis Coquelin and Ryo Miyaichi, and will likely look to include one of those names in part exchange.
Gunners fans are desperate to see a natural defensive midfielder ply his trade at the Emirates Stadium this season as the club’s current options of Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta lack similar credentials to that of Yaya Toure, Nemanja Matic or Steven Gerrard in protecting the back four.
