Following the news Olivier Giroud will be sidelined for three months with injury, Arsenal are considering a surprising £50m bid for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, according to the Daily Express.
Giroud picked up the problem during the latter stages of the 2-2 Premier League draw with Everton on Saturday and the initial prognosis isn’t good, with suggestions the France international faces a lengthy spell out.
Although there are a number of players currently at the Emirates Stadium who can act as a forward, manager Arsene Wenger is concerned about the lack of traditional No.9s.
At the moment only youngster Yaya Sanogo can be considered as a like-for-like replacement and having never scored a competitive goal for the Gunners the 21-year-old lacks experience to say the least.
Joel Campbell, Lukas Podolski, Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott can also operate in the role, but all four players are generally used to wider berths that support the striker.
That is what has drawn Wenger to Cavani, who it’s thought PSG could be tempted into selling just 12 months after making him their club record signing from Napoli.
The 27-year-old set the Ligue 1 champions back £52.7m in 2013, but it’s believed an offer of around £50m would be enough to convince them to part with the Uruguay international.
Cavani has failed to settle at the Parc des Princes with the main focus in attack being given to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and with boss Laurent Blanc keeping tabs on Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, the South American could be sold to fund a move for the French star.
