27 year old World Cup winner Pique spent four years at Old Trafford before returning to the Nou Camp back in the summer of 2008 but has found himself warming the bench a fair bit thus far this season.

Pique has started just one of Barcelona’s four La Liga fixtures this season and with new signing Jérémy Mathieu impressing and Thomas Vermaelen also having been brought in by boss Luis Enrique the formidable defender may be left considering his options.

Man United have started the season very poorly and Louis van Gaal will be well aware that he needs a central defender or two to help beef up a back-line that conceded five away at newly promoted Leicester City on Sunday.

Pique will not be used to being left out of Barcelona’s starting eleven, having made 269 appearances for the Catalan outfit, but could he really be considering leaving the La Liga giants for a second time?

During his previous spell at Man United Pique made 23 appearances.

Van Gaal has seen youngster Tyler Blackett and Northern Irishman Jonny Evans both struggle for consistency this season and there is a very real need to invest heavily on a defensive solution or two.
