Jose Mourinho’s feud with Manuel Pellegrini rumbles on, with the Chelsea manager declaring today that the Chilean City boss “killed” Mark Clattenburg with his comments about the referee’s performance in City’s draw with Arsenal earlier this month.

Quoted in the Daily Mail, Mourinho accused Pellegrini of being dishonest by claiming not to criticise officials: “It was not once or two or three times that he told everyone he doesn’t speak about referees: [yet] he killed Clattenburg”. The Portuguese manager then accused his counterpart of similar hypocrisy about Chelsea: “three or four times he says he doesn’t speak about me or my teams: he did it once more.”

Mourinho is known for criticising referees, while Pellegrini made a point last year of saying that kind of behaviour was “not his way“; shortly before being handed a two match ban for questioning the impartiality of Swedish ref Jonas Eriksson after Manchester City’s defeat to Barcelona.

The tedious back-and-forth between the two managers looks set to continue, perhaps distracting people from the worrying fact that Mark Clattenburg is now the Premier League’s senior referee.
