Whilst it’s true that Arsene Wenger has seen his defensive options reduced through the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, as well as suffering more than his fair share of injury concerns, it is a tad surprising that the Gunners boss would be ready to mount such a big money bid for a central defender.
Wenger has seen the pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as his first choice starters for the best part of 18 months and though it’s true that neither player has been at their best this season it would be something of a knee-jerk reaction to make a big move for German international Hummels.
Man United are also known to be chasing the 25 year old and Louis van Gaal’s need is far greater than Wenger’s, not least as the north London side has seen summer signing Calum Chambers look mighty impressive thus far this term.
