The Gunners are interested in strengthening at the back after a tough start to the season, with Arsene Wenger still searching for a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen after selling him to Barcelona in the summer.
The Dutch international has shown himself to be a solid and reliable performer in the Premier League and at international level, having shone for the Netherlands at this summer’s World Cup.
With Vlaar’s contract at Villa Park set to expire at the end of this season, Arsenal may be able to land him on a cut-price deal this January, which will no doubt appeal to the club as they ponder an alternative to the more expensive Mats Hummels.
The Borussia Dortmund centre-back is another player on Wenger’s radar at the moment, but Vlaar is likely to be available for a reasonable price as Villa will want to avoid losing him for free at the end of the season, as he continues to stall on extending his deal with the club.
Vlaar, 29, has been with Villa since 2012, and has been club captain for much of his time with Paul Lambert’s side.
