The Dutch under-21 international was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League last summer with the likes of Southampton and Sunderland both credited with an interest along with the Gunners.

But Arsenal still seem to be in pole position to land his signature and have been pondering making an £8m bid for the 23-year-old.

Arsene Wenger is understood to have sent scouts to watch Van Dijk on numerous occasions this term, with the Frenchman keen to strengthen his defence in January.

Wenger admitted last week that he will be looking to strengthen the side’s ‘weak’ defence in the new year.

And they have been given a huge boost in their pursuit of the player after he said: “Arsenal is an amazing club, of course,”

“It’s a big club with a great history as well.”

When asked if he would be keen on a move to England’s top-flight, he added: “I have ambitions, of course, like every player.”
