Arsenal are already being linked with a host of new defenders in the new year, including Manchester United’s Chris Smalling and Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar, but Wenger’s search is becoming so stretched that he is said to be weighing up a move for ex-Chelsea star Ricardo Carvalho, according to the Daily Star.

Wenger has been on the trail of Smalling since the summer, and was believed to be close to making his move for the England international before moving for Danny Welbeck instead.

However, in recent weeks he has been linked with cut price moves for Dutch pair Ron Vlaar and Virgil Van Dijk of Villa and Celtic, respectively.

But in a further twist, Wenger may decide to turn his attentions to former Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho, 36.

The veteran Portuguese star is currently with Ligue 1 side Monaco, but Wenger is though to be keen on bringing him to the Emirates to provide cover for current pair Laurent Koscelny and Per Mertesacker.
