Morgan Schneiderin will miss Southampton’s Premier League match with Arsenal on Wednesday through injury says manager Ronald Koeman.

According to Sky Sports, Koeman confirmed that the midfielder had sustained an adductor injury against Manchester City but that he would need a scan before the full scale of the issue was known.

The French international limped off at half-time and wasn’t seen after the break in Saints 3-0 defeat to City on Sunday afternoon.

“Morgan’s not ready for Wednesday because he needs a scan on his adductor in his right leg, to find out exactly what happened,” said Koeman. “It’s not too soon to say he can’t play Wednesday but for how long we don’t know.”

Southampton must now start a crucial period of the season without their midfield lynchpin. They play seven matches in 25 days including fixtures against Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea.

On-loan Atletico Madrid centre-back Toby Alderweireld filled in Schneiderlin’s position in the second half against City and could do the same against Arsenal. Koeman also confirmed that Jack Cork is now fit again.

“We know exactly what Morgan means for our team. He’s one of our key players and if you miss a key player it’s always difficult for the rest of the team,” said Koeman. “We know that and we can’t do anything about that.”
