Arsenal face a fresh injury crisis, this time in midfield, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a major doubt for the Gunners trip to Liverpool this weekend.

The 21 year old limped off during Arsenal’s 4-1 win against Newcastle at the Emirates on Saturday after suffering a similar issue against Galatasaray in the Champions League.

The England star is expected to go for a scan on Monday according to the Daily Mirror and will have an injection to try and ease the issue.

The full extent of Chamberlain’s injury will not be known until later today but Arsenal are optimistic he could still be available for Arsenal’s trip to Anfield this Sunday.

The loss of Chamberlain would be a heavy blow for the Gunners with Mikel Arteta, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere already on the sidelines and the busy Christmas fixture list fast approaching.

“We cannot afford to lose him at the moment,” said Wenger about Oxlade-Chamberlain. “I hope it’s nothing bad. He had a little bit of inflammation before the game. I took him to Galatasaray and maybe two games [in five days] was a lot for him.”

Whilst Lauren Koscielny will definitely not be available for Arsenal’s trip to Merseyside,  Theo Walcott is expected back in the match day squad after sitting out the last seven games for Arsene Wenger’s side with a groin strain.
