The 25-year-old struck in the first half of their crunch clash which ended 1-1. Liverpool needed to win to progress to the knockout stages.

And he claimed that after the game Reds fans were calling out for him to link up with the Reds to take over from Gerrard.

“After the game a Liverpool fan shouted that I stay right here and will replace [Steven] Gerrard,” he said.

Asked what he replied, he said: “That he should forward the offer. But I think that was not made too seriously by him.”

Liverpool have reportedly been linked with a move for Frei, and are even willing to offer him a five-year deal.

However, he is unsure as to what his future may hold.

“I honestly do not think that will happen, from what I can see already,” he added.

“If an offer was to come in, I would think about that, but I am generally sceptical of a transfer in the winter.

“You come as new to a team that is already settled. Therefore, I would probably choose to finish the season in Basel and take part in the Champions League knockout round.

“I still have an FCB contract until 2017. In the summer, maybe it will look different again. Eventually I want to play abroad. Preferably in the Bundesliga or in England.”
