The 29 year old has publicly decried his position at the Emirates Stadium on a number of occasions, seemingly unhappy about his lack of playing time at Arsenal.

Podolski is yet to start a Premier League fixture this season with new arrivals Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez leading the World Cup winner to become something of a bit-part player at Arsenal

German national team record cap holder Matthaus believes Podolski needs to accept his position and buckle down and try to win his place back, not least as he is still contracted to Arsenal until the summer of 2016.

“What Podolski seeks is not important,” Matthaus told the Hamburger Morgenpost.

“What matters is what Arsenal want. There he has a contract to fulfill.

“In Bayern, he fled. The only club where he was a regular player was at Koln. You cannot always blame others if things go wrong. There are just others that are better.”

On the subject of apparent interest from Inter, the club Matthaus represented for four years, the 53 year old stated;

“As long as it’s only rumours, we must be cautious. I think that Inter are following more players and that anyone, at this time, could pursue Podolski,” Matthaus added.

“From one point of view, Podolski and Inter would certainly fit because both have big names and have had considerable success in the past. It could be positive to resume the pursuit of these successes together.

“But it hurts me to see where Inter is now. They have become a mediocre club, so Podolski would join a mediocre club, although Inter has more economic advantages than other clubs in Italy.”
